How to Make Your LinkedIn Headline 10x Stronger

How to Make Your LinkedIn Headline 10x Stronger
Insights from a career coach who’s helped hundreds of professionals improve their online presence

As a career coach, one of the most common areas I see professionals undervalue is their LinkedIn headline.

Every day, I review profiles of mid-career professionals who are experienced and capable, yet their headline simply reads something like “Marketing Manager at ABC Corp.” It may be factually correct, but it doesn’t communicate anything about their strengths, specialization, or goals.

If your headline is just your job title and company, you are missing a major opportunity to stand out and get found.

Why Your Headline Is More Important Than You Think

Your LinkedIn headline appears in several high-visibility places:

  • Recruiter search results

  • Comments you make on posts

  • Connection requests

  • Profile previews when someone hovers over your name

It is your digital first impression. And in today’s job market, first impressions matter. Your headline should make people want to click and learn more about you.

What We See in Client Profiles

The default headline LinkedIn provides is usually your current job title and employer. For example:

“Project Manager at XYZ Inc”

While that’s technically true, it does not show what you do well, how you create impact, or what kind of roles you are targeting next.

When recruiters are quickly scanning through hundreds of profiles, generic headlines like this are easy to overlook.

A Better Headline Formula That Works

Here is the headline structure we recommend to clients:

[What you do] | [Key impact or achievement] | [Industry keywords or top skills]

This structure helps your profile:

  • Highlight the value you bring

  • Include searchable keywords

  • Align with the types of roles or industries you are targeting

Examples from Real Coaching Sessions

We’ve worked with clients across a wide range of industries. Here are a few headline makeovers that worked:

❌ Before: “HR Manager at XYZ”
✅ After: “HR Manager | Building High-Performance Teams | DEI, Talent Strategy, Retention”

❌ Before: “Project Manager”
✅ After: “Project Manager | $2M+ Projects Delivered On Time | Agile, PMP, Jira”

❌ Before: “Business Analyst”
✅ After: “Business Analyst | Data-Driven Insights for Strategic Growth | SQL, Tableau, Python”

Each improved headline speaks to what the client does, how they create value, and what skills they bring to the table.

What We Advise Clients to Keep in Mind

  • Keep it under 220 characters

  • Use vertical bars ( | ) to break up ideas for clarity

  • Avoid vague buzzwords unless they are highly relevant to your industry

  • Align the headline with your future goals, not just your past roles

  • Use keywords that match the job titles and skills in roles you want to be considered for

Final Thought

Think of your LinkedIn headline as your personal headline in a recruiter’s feed. It should not just describe your job. It should reflect your unique value, the results you drive, and the direction you want your career to go.

✅ Be clear about what you do
✅ Highlight the outcomes you deliver
✅ Position yourself for what’s next
